Say It Ain't so? The same basic, boring, dull, Nightly Format is all your bar has to offer? IT'S JULY, BUT YOU HAVE NO PLANS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR FORMAT,
NOPE. YOUR GOING TO KEEP DONG, WHAT YOU KNOW IS NOT WORKING
Karaoke, Trivia, Local Bands, Darts, Pool Tournaments, and you wonder why your bar is slow?
Recently, a Mom and Son contacted me. Their Bar & Grille opened last July, they poured way too much $ into it. Anyway, they never got off the ground.
They started with "Karaoke", but very few patrons showed up. They moved on to Trivia, again, next to nobody attended.
Finally, they started booking local bands that played everywhere in their area.
They didn't charge a cover, so the bar took the burden of the band's fee.
And as usual, it was a disaster.
Band after Band, didn't draw enough people to even break even.
I would have prevented all of this from happening, but I was not contacted, until the bar was on it's last leg.
They were $295,000 in the RED with Sales Tax, Payroll Taxes, way behind.
Nobody can save a bar that is in this position, without more than a REMODEL, more than a new NAME, more than a change in Management.
Too many People enter the bar business with no business doing so.
They think it's "FUN". There is a huge difference sitting in front of the bar, than standing behind the bar owning it.
Why would staff stay on, if they are not getting paid?
Why would anyone want to frequent a dirty looking, awful smell, worn and torn bar?
Quite often it's too late.
On a Bar Show, the opening Announcer states "This year over 6500 bars are going to go out of business". This is a fact.
The key to making it in the bar business, is going in, Knowing, FIRST,EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW.
THEN DOING WHAT I KNOW, WHAT I DO.
The Bar Business is not a learn as you operate business. IT's all about knowing everything you need to know, before you even open the doors.
IT's doing everything you need to do as part of your operating the bar.
STOP MAKING ALL THE MISTAKES, STOP BOOKING ALL THE LOCAL BANDS, STOP BUYING EVERYONE FREE DRINKS, STOP LETTING YOUR STAFF USE THEIR CELL PHONES DURING WORK, STOP LETTING YOUR BAR STAFF DRINK WHILE WORKING, STOP WASTING MONEY ON ADVERTISING THAT NOBODY RESPONDS TO, STOP DOING WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING.
STOP LISTENING TO FAMILY, FRIENDS, THEY ARE NOT EXPERTS. STOP WASTING MONEY. FOR EVERY $1 YOU SPEND, YOU MAKE BACK $10 THAT IS THE GOLD STANDARD. LOOK AT YOUR REST ROOMS THEY REFLECT THE QUALITY OF CUSTOMERS YOU HAVE COMING IN. WHY ARE SO MANY OWNERS SIMPLY OUT OF TOUCH WITH EVERY ELEMENT AND DYNAMIC OF OPERATING A FOOD/LIQUOR INTERIOR,EXTERIOR OF THEIR VENUE? YOU DON'T HIRE STAFF THAT HAS GONE FROM BAR TO BAR IN A YEAR, YOU DON'T GIVE ACCESS TO YOUR LIQUOR ROOM TO EVERYBODY, JUST ONE PERSON.
YOU INSTALL CAMERAS AT ONCE. YOU SWEEP REGISTERS AT RANDOM TIMES OF THE NIGHT, SO THAT NOBODY KNOWS WHEN YOUR GOING TO CLEAR YOUR CASH DRAWS OF "X" AMOUNTS OF MONEY?
YOU NEVER DRINK IN FRONT OF YOUR STAFF, NOR DO YOU DRINK WITH YOUR STAFF, OR EVEN ALLOW PATRONS TO BUY YOUR STAFF DRINKS.
YOU DON'T TOLERATE OVER SERVING, NEVER ACCEPT OVER POURING.
YOU DON'T NEED AN ELABORATE LIQUOR INVENTORY SYSTEM TO CONTROL YOUR POURING, YOU CAN DO IT SIMPLY YOURSELF.
BUT BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO BACKGROUND, NO KNOWLEDGE, NO EXPERIENCE IN THE BAR BUSINESS, YOUR RELIANCE ON TOO MANY OTHERS IS THE MOST MONEY LOSING METHOD OF OPERATING YOU CAN CHOOSE. AND REMEMBER THIS BRAGGING THAT YOU "NEVER HAVE A COVER CHARGE" DOES NOT PAY FOR THE BAND, IT ON PLACES THE BAND'S COST ON TO THE BACK OF THE BAR".
MOVIES ARE TYPICALLY $15 TO SEE, THE NEW "JURASSIC" FLICK IS SET TO BREAK ALL RECORDS AND DO A BILLION $, FASTER THAN ANY OTHER MOVIE IN HISTORY.
THERE IS A METHOD I CREATED TO IMPLEMENTING A COVER CHARGE, IT HAS A 98% ZERO RESISTANCE RATE.
YOUR NOT CHARGING A COVER IS NOT GIVING YOUR BAR OR CLUB ANY KIND OF ADVANTAGE, IN FACT, QUITE THE OPPOSITE. YOUR ATTRACTING THE WRONG CROWD RIGHT FROM THE START. YOU CAN'T DOUBLE,TRIPLE YOUR BOTTLE SERVICE WITH NO COVER CHARGE PATRONS FREQUENTING YOUR VENUE. 99.9% OF ALL BANDS THAT ARE COVER CHARGE FREE, ARE LOCAL BANDS, THAT PLAY THE SAME SONG SETS, WEAR THE SAME ONSTAGE CLOTHES, HAVE NO REGARD FOR THEIR PERFORMANCES, FOR THEIR APPEARANCE, FOR THEIR AUDIENCE, FOR THEIR MUSIC.

THAT'S RIGHT, YOU DON'T NEED ANY "BUTT FUNNELL", I FIND THEM INSULTING AND DANGEROUS. ESPECIALLY WHEN LOCATED IN A COLLEGE BAR.
YOU DON'T NEED TO SQUEEZE ON TO THE DANCE FLOOR AND HAVE SEXUAL GENERIC CONTACT. THAT'S NOT EVEN RESPECTFUL.
BUT A "DANCE UP BAR", NO PLUMBING NEEDED.
NO WIRING OF ANY KIND REQUIRED.
"FIREBALL WHISKEY", "SHOTPAK SHOTS", SOLAR POWERED AND BATTERY OPERATED BLENDERS.
UPSCALE PLASTIC CUPS, NO GLASS, HUGE PARTY PORTION GROUP DRINKS.
BAR STOOLS IN A CERTAIN PORTION OF THE BAR A MUST, OTHERWISE STAND UP. THE BAR IS A POP UP BAR. THE THEME OF THE BAR CHANGES EVERY FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS. BEAUTIFUL BARMAIDS BEHIND THE BAR. ICE BINDS THAT HOLD PLENTY OF ICE. YOUR BAR WOULD BE THE ONLY ONE IN YOUR ENTIRE AREA WITH THE "DANCE FLOOR BAR". I CREATED THE CONCEPT. BUT NOW, IT'S A CROWD CREATOR. I ENVISIONED THIS BAR TO ADD THE ULTIMATE "BAR WOW", AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT DOES.
DANCE TO DRINK, DRINK TO DANCE.
TRUE STORIES, YOU CAN'T MAKE UP:
TWO OWNERS OF A GREAT SEAFOOD EATERY/BAR LET THEIR MANAGER GO.
WHAT A COLOSSAL, MAJOR MISTAKE.
BECAUSE, FOR THREE YEARS, THESE TWO OWNERS PLACED ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS, FOH AND BOH ON THIS MANAGER.
THEY PLAYED BIG SHOTS STOPPING IN WHEN THEY WANTED, WITH NOT A CARE IN THE WORLD.
THE EATERY/BAR DID 1.4MILLION LAST YEAR UNDER THE TOOLING OF THIS MANAGER.
NOW, THE STAFF MORALE IS IN THE GROUND, THE ENERGY LEVEL IS NON EXISTENT, THE OWNERS DON'T HAVE A CLUE.
THEY WALK AROUND WITH SUCH AN ATTITUDE.
THEIR EGOS AND ATTITUDES ARE GOING TO COST THEM TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS.
THEY ARE NOT "PEOPLE OWNERS", THEY HAVE AN IDEAL LOCATION, BUT TOO MANY MISSTEPS THAT ARE GOING TO COST THEM MORE AND MORE BUSINESS. THEIR EGO CLASH RESULTED IN A GREAT MANAGER LEAVING. HUGE MISTAKE.
IF YOU WANT YOUR BAR TO MEET THE "GOLD STANDARD" THEN you must focus on "YOUR ATMOSPHERE", "Your Liquor, Beers, Wine Presentation, and your Staff."
Your Bar has no focus on "BAR FUN" or "BAR CREATIVITY". You let someone else do the ordering.
You have no idea what sells, and what doesn't.
You ask for no support from your liquor, your beer or your energy drink vendors.
You ignore Craft Beers, because you don't understand them, and nobody is asking for them.
You have no "Craftinis".
You have no "BAR EXCITEMENT".
You have the same regulars, but at night, when you should be packed with a great Crowd of beautiful Women and Men who spend, you have neither.
Your an Owner, but you act like a "kid in a candy store".
You dress very, very inappropriately.
You drink in your own bar setting a poor example for your Staff, because of your behavior, your language, and your sexual harrassment of Female Patrons and even Employees.
Your a lame Owner, who should not even own a bar.
You don't care about civility, about foul language, about sexual remarks, you just let your bar slide more and more into the "Bar Abyss".
BUT, it doesn't have to be like this. YOU don't have to act like this.
Your Bar can BOOOOOOM.
It's all up to YOU.
Why lose yourself to drinking?
Why treat people with no respect?
Why talk to Women with such disdain?
Why let your Bar become so dirty, filled with grime?
The liquor bottles are sticky.
The beer lines are clogged.
The Coolers are disgusting.
The Ice Machine is filled with slime.
You have let you bar go bust, why not reverse your trend and go "BOOST"?
Never have so many bars gone out of business, because of Owners who don't care.

When was the last time you looked @ what you spent each week to open the doors of your Restaurant?
When was the last time you reviewed your menu to "86" what your wasting money on even ordering?
When was the last time you combined your bar with your food so that your Patron enjoyed an "ADVENTURE IN DINING & DRINKING"?
When was the last time, you had a "Secret Shopper" review your staff, your presentations, your entire operation, while you were not around?
When was the last time you installed cameras?
When was the last time you fired weak employees, who were hurting not helping your restaurant?
When was the last time you reviewed your Trip Advisor, Yelp, Google, Urban Spoon Reviews and did something about them?
Your Marriage is in shambles, your restaurant is on it's last plate, what are you prepared to do to reverse all of this Negativity?
RISE UP, WAKE UP, GET A NEW ATTITUDE, GET RID OF ALL THE NEGATIVITY FROM STAFF TO PEOPLE YOU DO BUSINESS WITH. LIFE IS TOO SHORT AND YOU DON'T NEED ANY OF THEM.
IT IS Vital to your Restaurant, Nightclub, Bar, Lounge, Sports Bar, Bar and Grille, Gentlemen's Club, that you don't waste your valuable dollars in print publications. The Majority of people get their news from online now.
The Problem is, the ads that are linked to certain media sites have no relevance to the demographics that are going to the site.
The problem is, using radio, "iheartradio" Ownership are stressing that Salespeople push 30 second spots, the challenge here is, nobody can remember a 30 second radio commercial. I have spent millions on radio, I swore by it, I loved it, I made millions from it.
But that was when radio was viable, and there were no ipads, no tablets, no Sirus/XM Satellite Radio, it was when Radio had the power.
Of course Howard Stern on Satellite Radio, Ryan Seacrest on Terrestrial Radio, local markets like Sarasota, Florida have for the past 20 years, "Jones and Crane", two great radio on air personalities, the problem is, their format is stale.
They have "Champagne Fridays", when it should be "Craft Beer Fridays", they outdated their show with their "nude news", cute,OK amusing, but not LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY and that is what morning radio should be.
They have on the Owner of the only local Comedy Club, he brings on guests Comedians, but I just don't laugh that much, it's not that funny.
My point is, people want to escape from the constant terror in the World, so when they turn on radio, they want what they use to have, but it seems "iheartradio", carrying a tremendous debt produces huge so called Award Shows to schmooze Top Talent, and put on Concerts, but does not have that local listener to station relationship anymore. Sure "Jones & Crane" raised more blood donors than any other station in the "iheartradio" Group and that is remarkable, it shows their listeners care, but their "Friday Night Dance Party" is outdated, even though, their format is an oldies station, it's 2015, sadly generations are almost gone, and it's time to update a format that could bring back viable food and beverage Advertisers, that saw actual results.

Thank you for the posts I have read on your website. I am a Dj that has been playing at the one venue for the past 10 years. I have always made sure that I am current, relevant, offering new remixes and ever changing sets weekly. I am however, extremely frustrated with the venue I am working at as it seems I am more invested in it than the manager there. I am a manager myself in my day job, however this is not based in the entertainment industry. I have seen the venue on a steady decline for the past months and all suggestions/ideas I have tried to suggest have fallen on deaf ears. I am at the stage where I am wanting to set up a meeting with the Owner of the venue to ask how I may either contribute to running the nights I am working or at least be part of the rebuilding of it. I love the venue and enjoy working there and would like to remain there as long as possible. With the current patrons through the door and lack of investments in the night life at this venue, I don't see anyone's future as being secure. Where do I start? What can I do to revive the place I love?

My Response: Craig, your heart and mind are in the right place, but realistically you are not going to change what managers allow.
Your best opportunity is to quit, but first line up another job that is at a far better run venue, than the one you presently work at now.
Going to the next level of Authority will serve no purpose, because they are fully aware of what is going on, and they too do not care.
There are too many chains of command,STAY A GREAT DJ. But, don't get involved in areas of the business that you clearly see are being neglected, that are costing the Venue business, but that nobody seems to care.
When companies own multipule Units, and don't stay on top of their day to day operations, they end up with "DRAMA","SOAP OPERAS", and "MONEY MISSING".
GRILLED, STEAMED, SMOKED, IT'S SUMMERTIME, FRESH NEW COOKING METHODS MONTHS. STOP THE FRYING, THE BAKING, FOR ONCE, CHANGE YOUR COOKING TECHNIQUES FOR THE SUMMER, WATCH YOUR CUSTOMER COUNTS GO UP, UP, UP. ADD MENU ITEMS YOU NEVER HAVE SERVED BEFORE. SEAFOOD IS IN HUGE DEMAND, FRESH, SEAFOOD. STEAK IS AT IT'S LOWEST SERVING SHARE SINCE 1978.

AIRFARE,HOTEL, LIMO, MEALS,HIS ADDITIONAL RIDER REQUESTS AND HIS FEE.
BOOKING A CELEB FOR AN APPEARANCE HAS TO BE JUSTIFIED NOT JUST BY THE MEDIA REQUESTS FOR FREE PASSES TO PHOTOGRAPH OR INTERVIEW THE INDIVIDUAL, BUT WHAT DO THEY BRING TO YOUR VENUE, THAT IS GOING TO GENERATE SERIOUS REVENUE?
I USE TO BOOK PLAYBOY CENTERFOLDS, PENTHOUSE CENTERFOLDS, THEY DRAW CROWDS, THEY PARTICIPATED IN DANCE CONTESTS, THEY MODELED FASHIONS, THEY WERE VERY INTERACTIVE AND CROWD FRIENDLY.
BUT TODAY, YOU HAVE WAY TOO MANY UNCIVILIZED INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE NO RESPECT AND CREATE CONFRONTATIONS THAT CREATE TOTALLY NEGATIVE APPEARANCES. THERE IS TOO MUCH VIOLENCE, TOO MANY PROBLEMS, THE WAY TO AVOID ALL OF THEM, IS TO RUN A TIGHT FORMAT, THAT DOES NOT ALLOW FOR ENTOURAGES. IT'S ALMOST ALWAYS THE HANGER- ON FRIEND WHO OVERSTEPS THE BOUNDARIES AND YOU HAVE AN IN YOUR FACE INCIDENT, THAT WAS TOTALLY AVOIDABLE, POSTED ON TMZ.
